Series winner in the rookie class: Cleveland Cherry

Cleveland Cherry of New Zealand poses for a photograph prior the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie World Championship 2024 in Milano, Italy on May 24, 2024.

You have to take every opportunity that comes your way. That’s the tip Cleveland Cherry would give young athletes. Something that the three-time New Zealand Rookie Champion of 2022, 2023 and 2024 obviously takes to heart himself. The man from Tokoroa won bronze at the 2024 Rookie World Cup and hopes to get many more chances to compete at the highest level.

What is your job?
I’m a diesel mechanic. My job requires technical understanding, craftsmanship and a lot of patience – qualities that also benefit me in competitive sports.

What discipline is your personal strength and why?
The Standing Block Chop. This was a discipline that I had from the start – the technique was easy for me and I was able to make quick progress. It’s all about explosive power, precision and the right timing, and that’s exactly what I find appealing. As soon as the axe hits the wood and you feel the perfect swing, it’s an incredible feeling.

What motivated you to take part in STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®?
For me, it was the perfect combination of two things: I can do the sport I love and travel the world. STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® gives me the opportunity to see new places, get to know different competition conditions and compete against the best.

Is there a special moment in your STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® career that you will never forget?
My first national rookie title during the COVID period was something special for me. The circumstances were challenging and there was a lot of uncertainty, but that was what made the victory all the more valuable. It was a moment when all the hard training paid off and I knew: this is just the beginning.

Do you have a goal for your STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® career?
Yes, beating Jack Jordan at least once – that would be a real highlight for me. As part of the New Zealand team, I also want to compete on an international stage and represent my country in the major competitions. It would be an honour to compete for the title together with New Zealand’s best athletes.
