Extreme sports “on the beach” - Germany’s best logger sports athletes are coming to Essen

Essen, 28 June 2023. The sports city of Essen will be boosted by an extreme sports highlight in 2023. On 30 September/1 October, the best logger sports athletes in Germany are coming to Lake Baldeney Seaside Beach in Essen to compete for the title of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® German Champion 2023 in three performance categories. For the pros, the elite class in logger sports, this is not just about the national title; it's also a unique opportunity. The German Champion will qualify for the 2023 World Championship, taking place in their home country. Tickets for the 2023 German Championship are now available: http://stihl-timbersports.ticket.io.

On Saturday 30 September, first the women and the up-and-coming athletes will compete in the axe and saw events. Germany’s best female logger sports athletes will compete for points in three disciplines, while the “elite of tomorrow” will complete five disciplines. Points are distributed according to placement in each discipline. The athlete with the highest score at the end of the competition will become the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® German Women's Champion or German Rookie Champion 2023.

The highlight of the weekend will then be on Sunday 1 October. The national logger sports elite will compete with the pros for the national title. They must complete a total of six disciplines as fast as possible, three on the axe and three on the saw. The competitor with the most points across all disciplines will become the 2023 German Champion and qualify for the 2023 World Championship, taking place on 3 and 4 November in Stuttgart.

The current German champion Danny Martin is a favourite. The Sinntal athlete showed impressive form in 2022 and topped off the year with fourth place in the World Championship. One of his biggest rivals is Marcel Steinkämper. The 26-year-old followed the 2021 German Rookie Championship by winning the bronze medal at the 2022 German Championship – in his first year as a pro. In 2023, the Minden-based athlete plans to continue his steep rise and, as a North Rhine-Westphalian native, hopes for a home advantage in Essen. However, the athletes must first qualify for the German Championship. Only the ten best logger sports athletes in the country will be there at Lake Baldeney. The decision will be made on 15 July 2023 in Lindau.

Return to the Ruhr area

As early as 2021, the Ruhr area showcased itself as a suitable location for spectacular extreme sports events. Back then, the Amphitheatre Gelsenkirchen was the venue for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® German Championship, which was decided at the last second with a world record. Germany’s top athletes want to build on this at Seaside Beach in Essen in 2023.

Anyone who cannot be there in person can also watch a live stream of the competition free of charge. More information on this, as well as the German Championship and STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® can be found on our website, our database and our Facebook and Instagram channels.
