Erin LaVoie’s motto is that you should have fun in everything you do. This approach seems to work very well for the American. She competed in her first competition in college over 20 years ago – and has never stopped. In 2023, she won the International Women’s Cup in Rotterdam, and in 2024, Erin repeated this success, setting a new world record in the Underhand Chop.
What is your job?
I started crossfit around 13 years ago and was immediately enthusiastic. The strength, endurance and balance required by this sport are precisely the components that are also important for logger sports. I’ve owned my own studio in Spokane, Washington, and I’ve been a trainer there for over 12 years. I also volunteer for the fire service.
What discipline is your personal strength and why?
The Underhand Chop. It was part of my first competitions and I enjoy it. This is also where I feel the strongest mentally compared to the other disciplines – it's easy for me to find my rhythm and focus.
What motivated you to take part in STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®?
New challenges, but above all it was something new. I have two brothers and competing has always been part of my life – I love to challenge myself. A new competition, a new stage on which I could prove myself – that was just right for me. When I started, women weren't allowed at all, and when STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® opened up the competitions, it was clear to me: I have to be there.
Is there a special moment in your career that you will never forget?
Of course, the big successes come to mind first, but for me there is also a completely different event that remains unforgettable – albeit one with a bitter aftertaste. I was disqualified at an event because someone else touched my saw before the competition even started.
Do you have a goal for your STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® career?
Stay calm and enjoy the atmosphere of competition around me. In addition to this, giving everything, winning and then recovering – that’s how I tackle all sporting challenges.
