STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Six Nations Rookie Cup

Switzerland's Oliver Reinhard wins the 2020 Six Nations Rookie Cup

Switzerland's Oliver Reinhard wins the 2020 Six Nations Rookie Cup

Swiss athlete Oliver Reinhard held his nerve at the death to take gold at the 2020 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Six Nations Rookie Cup at Bavaria Film Studios, Munich.

Marking the return of international competition, the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Six Nations Rookie Cup delivered drama from the off as Swedish favourite Emil Hansson was left with a mountain to climb after disqualification in the opening round's Stock Saw discipline.

The contest, which saw some of Europe's best young loggers from Germany, Sweden, France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland compete across four disciplines, saw numerous lead changes with the Swiss trio of Reinhard, Nils Rölli & Robin Haas blocking out the podium places at the halfway stage.

That wasn't to last though as Hansson clawed himself back into contention through the Standing Block Chop and Single Buck, Reinhard meanwhile showing incredible maturity on route to a share of the lead going into the final discipline.

Rein-Hard: Hansson makes the Swiss man work hard for it
As the tension mounted the competition went right down to the wire, Reinhard and Hansson facing off, both seeking to snatch the gold. It was Emil Hansson who saw the wood drop first, in doing so remaining unbeaten after his first round DQ.

It wasn't however enough, as Reinhard delivered yet another accomplished performance, his time of 28.23 seconds enough to secure the 10 points required to finish top of the standings, just one point ahead of the battling Hansson, and three ahead of eventual Bronze medalist Loic Voinson of France.

Clearly delighted to be back out there competing, Reinhard commented: "It's awesome to be out there again. Being able to compare yourself to the other competitors and go head-to-head made for a special atmosphere. It certainly felt very professional and fancy to be in a film studio – a unique experience and I really loved it."

On his performance, Reinhard added: "I would say it's a solid result. It wasn't my best or my personal best, but I made a solid move and managed to take the win. I had a bit of a luck there with Emil cutting a DQ, but sometimes you need luck."

Understandably pleased with the way he fought his way back into the ascendency, Hansson mimicked Reinhard's pleasure towards being back competing on the international stage adding: "It was really fun to compete again and I'm pretty happy about the competition."
